UAE Sidesteps Questions on Alleged Pre-Oct. 7 Intelligence Sharing With Israel

The United Arab Emirates has not denied reports that its president, Mohammed bin Zayed, allegedly warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu days before the October 7, 2023, attack that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was preparing a major operation. When questioned about revelations by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it does not comment on "media reports or speculation concerning conversations between leaders." However, Abu Dhabi emphasized that communication channels between the two countries have remained open since diplomatic relations were established over five years ago.

"When necessary, all relevant intelligence has been and continues to be shared between the concerned parties," the Emirati ministry declared. It added that since October 7, its actions have consistently aimed to promote de-escalation, regional stability, and the prevention of violence. The ministry's response neither explicitly confirms nor denies a specific warning about Sinwar to Netanyahu, but it does affirm that relevant intelligence has been shared with Israel when deemed necessary.

According to Haaretz, which cited sources, bin Zayed personally alerted Netanyahu in late September 2023 about Sinwar's intentions, urging him to take the threat seriously. The report claimed Netanyahu reacted with relative calm and did not relay this information to Israeli security officials. The Prime Minister's office has vehemently denied this account, calling it an "absolute lie" and stating Netanyahu did not speak with the UAE president during that period or receive any warning from him.
