Ben Gurion Airport Parking Full Amid Holiday Travel Surge

Ben Gurion Airport's (TLV) parking facilities are completely full, with no available spots until further notice, according to the Israel Airports Authority. This situation is occurring during the peak travel season for the High Holidays, leading to significant disruption for travelers planning to leave their cars at the airport for extended periods, especially families with children and luggage or those flying during off-peak public transport hours.

The airport's parking system comprises approximately 20,000 spaces across 27 lots, and the current full capacity highlights the gap between available parking and the tens of thousands of passengers passing through during busy periods. Travelers are advised to avoid arriving by private car and to utilize public transportation instead.

For those seeking alternatives, the train is presented as the most straightforward option, with Ben Gurion Airport station directly connected to Terminal 3. Train fares vary by distance, ranging from 11.5 NIS for up to 15 km to 30.5 NIS for 75-120 km. Unlike parking, train fares are not dependent on the length of the trip abroad, making it a more economical choice for longer vacations.

Buses also serve the airport, with route 485 connecting Jerusalem to Terminal 3. Other intercity buses reach the El Al junction on Route 40, from which route 5 provides access to Ben Gurion Airport and Airport City. This bus option is particularly useful for travelers without direct train access from their homes.

Combining private vehicles with trains is another strategy. Travelers can drive to a train station further from the airport, park their car there, and continue to TLV by train. However, potential travelers must verify parking availability and cost at these alternative stations, as they may also fill up during peak times.

The main drawback of public transport is its limited operating hours, especially during nights, Saturdays, and holidays. Travelers flying at these times must check schedules in advance, as holiday periods may also see schedule changes. Taxis and private shuttles are more convenient but significantly more expensive, with fares from Jerusalem estimated between 273-406 NIS, depending on the tariff and traffic. For groups, splitting taxi costs can make it more affordable.

For those only picking up passengers, a dedicated waiting lot offers up to 60 minutes of free parking. Exceeding this time incurs a fee, with a daily cap of 135 NIS during the peak season. Short-term parking lots near the terminal offer a 15-minute grace period, after which charges apply. Stopping or waiting on the roads within the airport premises is prohibited.
