Ben Gurion Airport announced an unusual situation Sunday, with all its private vehicle parking lots reaching full capacity due to the peak travel season of the High Holidays. The Israel Airports Authority urged drivers to avoid coming to the airport by car, stating that "due to the increase in passenger volume during the High Holidays, Ben Gurion Airport parking lots are currently at full capacity and there are no available parking spaces until further notice."
The airport authority estimated it would take many hours for parking spots to become available, and even then, the lots would remain heavily congested. This exceptional announcement comes as approximately 100,000 passengers were expected to pass through the airport on Sunday, marking it as the busiest day of the year at Israel's main airport.
The Airports Authority has increased staffing to manage the crowds, which include around 600 departing and arriving flights on Sunday alone. Throughout September, a month typically seeing peak air traffic partly due to the High Holidays, an estimated 2.5 million passengers are expected to travel through Ben Gurion Airport.
