צה"ל והשב"כ הודיעו בערב יום שישי, 15 בספטמבר, על חיסולו של בכיר בחמאס בדרום רצועת עזה. על פי הערכות, המטרה העיקרית של הפעולה הייתה נאיף אבו-עביד, מפקד חטיבת רפיח של חמאס. דיווחים פלסטיניים מצביעים על כך שבתקיפת צה"ל באזור חאן יונס נהרגו שני בני אדם ונפצעו 14 נוספים.

ראש הממשלה בנימין נתניהו ושר הביטחון יואב גלנט פרסמו הודעה משותפת לפיה "אף מחבל לא יכול להרגיש בטוח, חמאס לא יהיה ברצועת עזה". גורם במערכת הביטחון אישר לחדשות N12 כי אבו-עביד היה המטרה וכי סביר להניח שהוא חוסל.
