Defense Minister Katz Shares Saddam Hussein Video Amid Controversy Over Central Command Appointment

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Katz sparked controversy after sharing a historical video on social media showing Saddam Hussein publicly accusing and removing alleged disloyal party members shortly after seizing power in Iraq in 1979. The video, depicting Hussein naming 68 supposed conspirators who were then arrested and later executed, was shared with the caption "They used to make dismissals in style," as a dark joke.

This post came amid Katz's recent announcement of a replacement for Central Command Chief Avi Blot, which he made live on television. Katz denied calling for Blot's dismissal, calling such claims "absolute lies" and part of a political campaign against the government. He explained that the appointment of Brigadier General Dado Bar-Kalifa as Blot's successor was based on the Chief of Staff's recommendation and was already underway before the interview where the dismissal rumors arose.

The controversy followed Blot's challenge to Katz's decision to cancel a restriction order against Tal Yinon Dardik, a suspect in abuse of Palestinians who is currently on a hunger strike. Katz also met with Dardik, a move the IDF said was not coordinated with the Chief of Staff, who later announced no new general appointments would be made until 2027 due to Israel's election cycle. This means Blot will remain in his post at least until summer 2027.

Katz accused former Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan of threatening to dismiss another general and warned that if Golan became defense minister, it could lead to reinstating old "conspiracy" figures, potentially harming Israeli settlements and security. Katz emphasized that such a scenario would not happen under his watch.

The Saddam Hussein video serves as a grim historical reminder of brutal political purges, contrasting with the current Israeli military leadership disputes and political tensions surrounding appointments in a sensitive security environment.
