Arel Segal Says Only IDF Chief of Staff Can Remove Commanders, Not Defense Minister Katz

Arel Segal and Eyal Berkovich clashed on 103fm over the controversy surrounding Defense Minister Israel Katz and Central Command Chief Avi Blot. Segal argued that Katz lacks the authority to dismiss a regional commander, stating only the IDF Chief of Staff can do so. He described the dispute as a "storm in a teacup" and criticized Katz for mistakenly claiming Blot would be replaced, noting that Katz later clarified he had no intention to dismiss him.

Segal explained that if Katz truly wanted to remove Blot, he would have had to convene a cabinet meeting, dismiss the Chief of Staff first, and then remove Blot. He emphasized that the defense minister's role does not include firing regional commanders, calling the entire episode "ridiculous."

Berkovich sharply criticized Katz, calling him a "small-time political operator" who publicly announced Blot's dismissal without proper authority or consultation. Berkovich argued that such decisions should be made discreetly with the Chief of Staff and Prime Minister, not aired publicly for political convenience. He accused Katz of weakening the Central Command leadership.

Segal compared the situation to a previous incident involving Yair Golan and Shin Bet chief David Zini, questioning why Berkovich did not criticize Golan similarly. Berkovich responded that he did oppose that case and questioned why Prime Minister Netanyahu has not dismissed the Chief of Staff despite military problems.
