Israeli Defense Minister Announces Central Command Change Amid Controversy Over Coordination with IDF Chief

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz sparked a major controversy by announcing live on television his intention to replace Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot with Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa. Katz's announcement, made during a televised interview, was perceived as a dismissal linked to tensions between the two officers. The IDF spokesperson responded unusually, stating that Katz's remarks were not coordinated with Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, who fully supports Blot and has no plans to replace key commanders during this sensitive period. The spokesperson emphasized that any such decision would follow proper procedures.

Following this, Katz's office issued a statement claiming the move was based on Zamir's recommendation. According to the statement, Zamir had suggested Bar-Kalifa for the Central Command post as early as April and requested Katz to interview him. Katz personally interviewed Bar-Kalifa in June, found him the best candidate, and decided to announce the appointment in the upcoming military rotation. Katz's policy aims to promote commanders with proven offensive records aligned with the security approach led by himself and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The announcement triggered sharp political reactions. Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the Yashar party and former IDF Chief of Staff, condemned the live dismissal as unprecedented and damaging to civil-military relations, calling it inappropriate and illegal. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett accused the government of undermining the IDF from within and promised to replace the current leadership. Retired Brigadier General Ofer Winter criticized the public manner of Blot's dismissal, highlighting Blot's efforts to implement sovereignty and protect settlements, and argued that the Defense Minister should not fire generals on live TV.

Conversely, Limor Son Har-Melech of the Otzma Yehudit party praised Katz's decision, accusing Blot of failing to focus on combating terrorism and instead targeting settlers, acting contrary to government policy. She stressed that military commanders must implement government policy, not personal views, and those wishing to set policy should enter politics.

The dispute exposes tensions between the political and military leadership over command appointments during a critical security period, with the IDF Chief of Staff and Defense Minister presenting conflicting narratives about the decision-making process. The situation remains unresolved as the official rotation has yet to be finalized.
