Defense Minister Katz and IDF Chief Zamir Clash Over Central Command Appointment

The conflict between Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi has intensified following Katz's announcement of replacing Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot with Brigadier General Dado Bar-Kalifa. Close associates of Katz have sharply criticized Kochavi, accusing him of disingenuous behavior, noting that Kochavi himself recommended Bar-Kalifa for the position as early as April. They questioned why Kochavi reacted so strongly to Katz's public announcement, asking, "What was he so surprised about?"

Katz's team also speculated whether Kochavi supported Bar-Kalifa's candidacy only to prevent him from becoming the military secretary to the Prime Minister. They condemned media briefings by the IDF spokesperson and Kochavi as inappropriate and damaging to the relationship between elected officials and military leadership.

In parallel, Katz criticized Major General Avi Blot's performance as Central Command chief, accusing him of lacking a sufficiently assertive approach to counterterrorism in the West Bank and delaying operations, including failing to prepare plans to take control of an additional refugee camp. This criticism comes amid the controversy surrounding Tal Yinon Dradik, suspected of involvement in abuse against Palestinians, including sexual assault. Blot had issued an administrative restraining order against Dradik following Shin Bet's recommendation, but after a military appeals court overturned it, Katz instructed Blot not to renew the order. Despite this, Blot and the military prosecution appealed to the district court, escalating tensions between Katz and Blot.

Blot has also been recognized by some settler leadership for expanding settlement activity during his tenure. The dispute between Katz and Blot is viewed by some political and military figures as extending beyond operational issues. Katz maintains he did not dismiss Blot but only announced a replacement previously promoted by Kochavi. However, the live broadcast of the announcement and the ensuing public confrontation have fueled criticism within political and defense circles that the move was not purely professional.
