IDF Chief Zamir Supports Central Command Leader Amid Controversy Over Replacement Announcement

A day after Defense Minister Israel Katz announced live on Channel 14 that he had found a replacement for Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot, naming Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa, the IDF clarified that Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi has no intention of changing senior commanders until 2027. Last night, Kochavi and Blot spoke, with the Chief of Staff assuring Blot, "You have my full support. You are not going anywhere." The two met again this evening with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Kochavi praised Blot's efforts in reducing terrorism levels in the West Bank and confirmed he would remain in his post until 2027. A senior officer criticized Katz's public announcement, saying, "You don't dismiss a general on television to the applause of the crowd. This is not a boxing ring." Meanwhile, Netanyahu expressed anger at Katz's handling of the situation, calling it "improper conduct" in private discussions.

In a meeting with Judea and Samaria local leaders, Katz stated that Blot was not dismissed and affirmed his support for all IDF commanders and soldiers, emphasizing there was no dispute with Blot. Despite these reassurances, tensions around Katz remain high. According to Channel 12, Katz's close aides launched a sharp attack against Kochavi, accusing him of foreign motives regarding Bar-Kalifa's appointment and questioning why Kochavi proposed Bar-Kalifa as a candidate back in April if he preferred Blot to stay.

Katz's team also criticized Blot for allegedly lacking an aggressive approach and delaying plans for taking over another refugee camp in the West Bank. On the other hand, Bar-Kalifa's associates denied any political commitments or detachment from military policy, stating he would work according to the Chief of Staff's decisions and that he maintains good relations with Blot. They confirmed ongoing cooperation and mutual respect between the two generals as they move forward.
