Tensions Escalate Between Defense Minister Katz and Central Command Chief Blot Over Administrative Order

Tensions between Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot have intensified following a dispute over an administrative expulsion order against Tal Yinon Dradik. The conflict peaked last week during a security briefing on the escalation in the West Bank, where Katz openly expressed dissatisfaction with Blot's handling of the case.

Dradik is suspected of involvement in abuse against Palestinians, including a nationalist-motivated sexual assault in March in the West Bank village of Humsa. Blot issued an administrative expulsion order against Dradik based on Shin Bet recommendations. After Dradik allegedly violated the order and was arrested, a military appeals court annulled the order due to procedural flaws but delayed enforcement to allow a state appeal to the district court.

Katz instructed Blot not to renew the expulsion order, urging alternative measures instead. This unprecedented ministerial intervention challenged the military's authority, as commanders traditionally hold sole power over such orders. Despite Katz's directive, Blot and the military prosecution appealed to the district court, escalating tensions and prompting messages to IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir.

Following Katz's public announcement on Channel 14 that he intends to replace Blot with Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa, Zamir issued a strong condemnation of Katz's remarks, emphasizing the need to keep politics out of the military. Zamir clarified he does not plan to change any commanders soon, citing operational considerations and the upcoming elections.

If the district court rejects the state's appeal, Dradik will be freed from restrictions unless Blot issues a new administrative order. The ongoing friction between Katz and senior military leadership is expected to continue, particularly if Blot defies Katz's explicit instructions. Earlier in May, Zamir had identified Bar-Kalifa as a candidate for Central Command chief, but no appointment was finalized at that time.
