IDF Central Command Chief Faces Public Ouster Controversy After Defense Minister's Announcement

The announcement by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz about his intention to replace IDF Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot has sparked significant controversy. Following the statement, the IDF spokesperson clarified that the move was not coordinated with the Chief of Staff and that there are currently no plans to replace Blot. Despite this, criticism has come from journalists, public figures, and politicians.

Journalist Avishai Greenstein sharply condemned the public attack on Blot, noting how within six months, a general once hailed as the best Central Command chief has been publicly ousted amid applause on live television. Greenstein attributed this to daily indoctrination and the silence of well-meaning individuals. Journalist Amit Segal described Katz's actions as "complete madness."

Hagai Segal also defended Blot, calling him the most talented and diligent general to have served at the Kfir Fortress, highlighting his unprecedented achievements in counterterrorism and his efforts to combat Jewish rioters despite high-level obstacles. He labeled Katz's public targeting of Blot as political intimidation and disgraceful.

Gadi Eizenkot, chairman of the Yisrael party and former IDF Chief of Staff, joined the criticism, condemning the manner of the announcement on the show "The Patriots" as an unprecedented low in civil-military relations and an improper, illegal act. Eizenkot emphasized that Israel is not private property and the IDF should not be used as a tool in politicians' primaries.
