Defense Minister Katz's Appointment Sparks Controversy and Damages Candidate's Military Career

The controversy surrounding Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz's announcement of his intention to appoint Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa as the commander of the Central Command continues to provoke strong reactions. Alongside criticism of the announcement's manner and the treatment of Major General Avi Blot, military analyst Avi Ashkenazi told 103FM that the move also severely harmed Bar-Kalifa's reputation. Ashkenazi stated that Katz not only damaged Blot but also "burned" Bar-Kalifa within the IDF by turning him into a political figure, labeling him a "political general," which could prevent his appointment.

This statement follows widespread criticism after Katz revealed the expected appointment in a television interview. Shortly afterward, the IDF spokesperson clarified that the announcement was not coordinated with the Chief of Staff and that there are currently no plans to replace the Central Command commander. Meanwhile, the Defense Minister's office emphasized that the decision is based on a recommendation submitted by the Chief of Staff in April and that the appointment is expected to occur during the upcoming round of military appointments.
