Defense Minister Katz Names Successor to Central Command Chief Amid Tensions

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Sunday in a Channel 14 interview that he intends to appoint Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa, head of the IDF Personnel Directorate, as the next commander of the Central Command, replacing the current commander, Major General Avi Blot. Both officers are religiously observant, wearing knitted kippot. Katz claimed that Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi recommended Bar-Kalifa for the position, although Halevi was reportedly unaware of Katz's public announcement beforehand.

The timing and venue of Katz's declaration, well before Blot's term ends, appear to be a clear signal to Blot amid their recent conflict over an administrative order issued against right-wing activist Tal Yinon Dardik. Blot, who commands the crucial Central Command responsible for the West Bank territories, has worked closely with the settler community throughout his tenure but has faced criticism from both left-wing groups and some right-wing factions due to his actions against nationalist crime.

Last week, Katz expressed anger over Blot's appeal against the decision to lift restrictions on Dardik, warning bluntly, "I will not tolerate non-compliance with government policy." This marks a sharp contrast to Katz's praise of Blot just eight months ago on the same channel, where he called Blot "the best Central Command chief in 20-30 years." The appointment of Bar-Kalifa, a key figure in IDF human resources, signals a significant leadership change in a role that heavily influences the future of the West Bank and Israeli settlements.
