Defense Minister Katz and IDF Chief Zamir Clash Over Central Command Leadership

The conflict between Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi has intensified following Katz's announcement to replace Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot with Brigadier General Dado Bar-Kalifa. Close associates of Katz have sharply criticized Kochavi, accusing him of disingenuous behavior and questioning why he was surprised by the appointment, noting that Kochavi himself recommended Bar-Kalifa for the position as early as April.

Katz's team also questioned whether Kochavi's opposition stemmed from a desire to prevent Bar-Kalifa from becoming the military secretary to the Prime Minister. They condemned the IDF spokesperson and Kochavi for their public briefings against Katz, calling them inappropriate and damaging to the relationship between elected officials and military commanders.

In addition to the dispute over the appointment, Katz criticized Major General Avi Blot's performance in the West Bank, accusing him of lacking a sufficiently aggressive approach against terrorism and delaying operational plans, including the failure to prepare for the takeover of an additional refugee camp. This criticism comes amid the controversy surrounding soldier Tal Yinon Dradik, suspected of involvement in abuse against Palestinians, including sexual assault. Blot had issued an administrative expulsion order against Dradik based on Shin Bet recommendations, but after the military appeals court overturned it, Katz instructed Blot not to renew the order. Despite this, Blot and the military prosecution appealed to the district court, further straining relations.

Blot's tenure has seen expanded settlement activity and new outposts in the West Bank, earning him some support among settler leadership. The public nature of Katz's announcement and the ensuing tensions have sparked debate within political and military circles about whether the dispute is purely professional or reflects deeper disagreements. Katz maintains he did not dismiss Blot but announced a replacement previously promoted by Kochavi, yet the live broadcast and public fallout continue to raise questions about the move's professionalism.
