Defense Minister Katz Sparks Controversy by Replacing Central Command Chief Amid Political Tensions

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced his intention to replace Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot with Major General Dado Bar Kalifa, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from military analysts and commentators. The decision, made ahead of the Likud party primaries, is viewed by critics as politically motivated and potentially damaging to the Israel Defense Forces' professional standing.

Prominent commentator Amit Segal condemned the replacement as "complete madness," emphasizing that Blot acted professionally and protected settlements without engaging in political timelines. Segal questioned the precedent such a move would set if a similar replacement occurred in the South Command for political reasons, warning against turning the military into a political reality show.

The dispute between Katz and Blot centers on the case of Tal Yinon Dardik, against whom a military exclusion order was not renewed following a military appeals committee ruling. Blot intended to appeal this decision, which angered Katz. The exclusion order, initially issued by Blot based on Shin Bet recommendations, related to Dardik's alleged involvement in a violent incident in the Jordan Valley village of Humsa in March. During that event, Palestinians, including women and children, were reportedly attacked with clubs, some were bound, a sexual offense was committed against one victim, and four individuals required medical treatment.

Katz opposed renewing the exclusion order and criticized Blot's decision to appeal its cancellation. Against this backdrop, Katz announced on Channel 14 his plan to replace Blot with Bar Kalifa as Central Command chief.
