Israel Captures Senior Hamas Security Chief in Gaza Operation

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the Shin Bet security agency officially confirmed on Tuesday the capture of Muein Ared, identified as the head of Hamas's internal security apparatus in Gaza. The operation involved special forces raiding a structure near Ared's home in western Gaza's Katiba battalion area, under heavy air force cover and intense exchanges of fire, with explosions heard as far as the Gaza border communities. No Israeli forces were harmed, and Ared has been transferred to Israel for interrogation.

Netanyahu hailed the security forces for the "daring operation" and revealed Ared's significant role within Hamas. According to the Prime Minister, Ared was responsible for concealing and transporting Israeli hostages, hiding senior Hamas officials, and rebuilding the terror group's capabilities. He was also recently involved in efforts to restore Hamas's governance in Gaza, deceiving on the issue of disarming the Strip, and aiding in terror attacks against Israeli forces and civilians.

A senior Israeli official told i24NEWS that Ared's arrest "throws Hamas off balance." The operation is seen as a significant blow to the organization, which has been attempting to reassert its control and civilian governance in Gaza. Hamas, in response, condemned the operation as a "grave crime" and a "deliberate disregard for civilian lives," accusing Israel of escalating the conflict and violating the ceasefire.

Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated Israel's commitment to eliminating Hamas leadership, stating, "Israel will continue to pursue all Hamas leaders and everyone who took part in the October 7 massacre." Defense Minister Israel Katz added that Israel would not wait for threats and would continue to thwart terrorists and strike terror infrastructure, promising a "harsh" response to any rocket fire from Gaza.
