IDF Captures Senior Hamas Security Official in Gaza Operation

In a special operation in Gaza City on Tuesday, Israel captured Moin al-Aarabid, a senior official in Hamas's internal security apparatus, and brought him to Israel, reportedly injured. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the operation targeted a senior Hamas operative responsible for counter-intelligence and intelligence within the organization. During the operation, the IDF conducted several airstrikes against threats to the forces operating on the ground.

Hamas's internal security mechanism is responsible for preventing espionage and identifying Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel. Palestinian reports indicate al-Aarabid served as a director in the Gaza district's security apparatus. The operation, which lasted several hours, involved special forces under the command of the Southern Command and did not involve ground troops. The target was ultimately taken and arrived in Israel injured, receiving medical treatment.

Israeli officials stated the operation was part of Israel's pressure campaign to dismantle the terrorist organization. Palestinian reports, however, claim the Israeli force was exposed, leading to exchanges of fire and significant airstrikes. These reports also claim four people were killed, including three children, according to Gaza health officials. Eyewitnesses reported Israeli fighter jets fired at least 12 missiles near the densely populated al-Kutiba area in western Gaza City, an area housing displaced families.

A Palestinian security source denied to Al Jazeera that a security apparatus director was arrested, claiming instead that a junior officer was abducted after his home was bombed, resulting in his wife's death. Hamas's Gaza communications director also stated that an Israeli special forces unit was discovered during a mission, prompting heavy Israeli airstrikes. The UN's Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, had previously criticized Israeli strikes in Gaza, warning they risked undermining a ceasefire and the potential for peace and economic prosperity in the region.
