IDF on High Alert After Hamas Security Chief's Capture in Gaza

The Israeli military has raised its alert level following the capture of a senior Hamas security official in Gaza, fearing retaliation from the organization. The operation, conducted by the Shin Bet and a special IDF unit, reportedly involved entering the Shati refugee camp in Gaza by vehicle. Palestinian reports claim the force was exposed by Hamas operatives, leading to an exchange of fire and a dual air and ground extraction, suggesting the arrest did not occur. However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the arrest, stating, "This is our policy: we don't wait for threats, but rather pursue Hamas terrorists, neutralize them, and destroy their terror infrastructure." He added that any action from Gaza against Israeli soldiers or civilians would result in a severe Israeli response.

The captured official, identified as Hamas's head of security, was transferred under heavy guard to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, where he underwent surgery for injuries to his lower limbs and is currently hospitalized. The operation was reportedly a response to an increase in incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza into Israeli territory. Israel Katz emphasized that the response to any launch from Gaza would be powerful and clear, with the focus being on Israel's reaction rather than the launches themselves.

Following the arrest, the IDF attacked several targets in Gaza to neutralize threats to security forces. A security source described the capture as a significant success, believing the high-ranking individual could provide valuable intelligence on Hamas's plans and internal activities. Shortly after, the IDF announced the targeted killing of another Hamas commander in Jabalia, northern Gaza, who was reportedly advancing terror plans against Israel and working to rebuild the organization's capabilities, violating the ceasefire.
