Israeli Forces Discover Deep Terror Tunnel, Weapons Cache in Qalqilya

Israeli police and Border Police forces, acting on intelligence, uncovered a sophisticated terror tunnel in the Palestinian city of Qalqilya. The tunnel, found in advanced stages of excavation, reached a depth of at least 25 meters. During the operation, a significant cache of weapons was discovered and seized, including an M16 rifle, a sniper rifle, ammunition, magazines, cell phones, fertilizer used for explosives, and a DVR device. Four suspects were arrested at the scene and handed over to police for questioning regarding the tunnel's purpose, its organizers, and the supporting infrastructure.

Authorities noted that the findings suggest a well-prepared terror infrastructure. This discovery follows a series of similar findings in the Samaria region in recent months, including another tunnel found near the separation barrier two weeks prior, concealed within an ancient water cistern. Qalqilya, designated as Area A under Palestinian control, has been the site of previous security operations.

Israeli Police stated they will continue proactive operations to uncover excavation infrastructure and weapons in the Samaria region and prosecute those involved. The operation is part of broader efforts to enhance security along the seam line and prevent infiltrations. The investigation into the four arrested suspects aims to understand the tunnel's intended use and organizational backing.

Local Israeli officials reacted to the discovery, with Rafi Sa'ar, Mayor of Kfar Saba and Chairman of the Forum of Seam Line Settlements, calling the incident serious and highlighting the immediate security threat to residents. He urged decisive action and systematic measures to prevent future threats, emphasizing the need for enhanced security along the seam line. Oshrat Gonen, head of the South Sharon Regional Council, echoed these concerns, stating the tunnel is further evidence of a growing threat beyond the security fence and stressed that the seam line must be treated as a front line requiring significant resources and attention, especially after the events of October 7th.
