Police Contradict Army on Qalqilya Tunnel Operation Findings

Israeli security forces have presented conflicting accounts regarding an operation in Qalqilya the previous evening, centered on the discovery of a tunnel. The military initially stated that forces found two openings approximately 12 meters deep, and after examination, ruled out the existence of a tunnel. However, the police later issued a statement confirming the discovery of a large tunnel opening equipped with surveillance cameras, and criticized the military's earlier statements as "inaccurate and irresponsible."

The military's operation was reportedly launched based on intelligence indicating the presence of weapons in the area. During the search, forces discovered the two openings, along with weapons including an M16 rifle, a hunting rifle, and a handgun. Four suspects were arrested and are undergoing investigation, with security forces continuing to search for additional openings and weapons.

The police, however, described the intelligence as "hot" and confirmed that the operation, conducted in cooperation with the Border Police and approved by the army, led to the discovery of a large tunnel opening concealed by burlap and fitted with cameras. An intelligence official involved in the operation stated that various weapons and combat materials were found, along with potassium fertilizer, a substance used in explosives. The official personally entered the tunnel to assess its characteristics.

The police emphasized that their reporting is based on accurate facts and that the operation involved uncovering a tunnel, not just two openings. Specialized units reportedly arrived to handle the discovered tunnels. Two of the arrested suspects, identified as Israeli citizens, had their detention extended by a court, while the other two are to be brought before a military court.

Investigations are ongoing, with the military continuing its search for further openings and weapons in the area.
