Two Israelis Arrested in Qalqilya Tunnel Discovery Have Detention Extended
A military court on Thursday extended the detention of two Israeli citizens arrested Wednesday during a police operation in Qalqilya, where authorities uncovered a tunnel equipped with surveillance cameras and weapons. Police stated that two additional suspects would be brought before a military court as the investigation continues.
Intelligence coordinator 'A' from the Shomron region's anti-crime unit described receiving intelligence about the presence of weapons, which necessitated a rapid operational plan approved by the IDF. The unit, along with Border Police, raided the location and apprehended four suspects. They discovered a large tunnel entrance concealed with burlap and monitored by closed-circuit cameras. The coordinator personally entered the tunnel to assess its dimensions and characteristics.
Among the findings were various weapons, explosives, and a bag of potassium fertilizer, a substance that can be used to create explosive devices. Two additional tunnel shafts were also found in the Qalqilya area.
Detective Sergeant Major Tzachi Ben Hamo, investigations and intelligence officer for the Shomron region, added that a comprehensive investigation was launched concurrently. The detention of two of the suspects, Arab Israelis, was extended today, and the other two suspects will also appear before a court for detention extension in the coming days.
