Israel's Desalination Plants Shut Down Again Due to Murky Seas

Most of Israel's desalination plants were shut down for a second time within 24 hours on Tuesday morning due to a sharp increase in seawater turbidity. The plants had briefly resumed operations overnight after an initial shutdown Monday, but the problem resurfaced, forcing another halt. Water Authority and Ministry of Energy officials are working to reduce demand until sea conditions improve, impacting agriculture and public landscaping.

The Water Authority and the Ministry of Energy attribute the shutdown to the unusually high turbidity, which can overload the filtration systems of the desalination plants. However, desalination now provides over half of Israel's domestic and industrial water, with some areas relying on it for up to 80%.
