צה"ל חיסל בשבוע שעבר במרחב חאן יונס את ג'האד סמיח מחמוד אסמעיל, בכיר בחמאס וראש חוליית נוח'בה. אסמעיל השתתף בפשיטה על ישראל ב-7 באוקטובר, שם היה מעורב בהיתקלות מול כוחות שריון ובחטיפתם של סרן עומר נאוטרה ז"ל, סמ"ר עוז דניאל ז"ל וסמל נמרוד כהן ז"ל. בהיתקלות זו נפגע גם נהג הטנק, סמל שקד דהן ז"ל.

במהלך המלחמה, אסמעיל היה מעורב במארבים נגד כוחות צה"ל. לאחרונה, כך לפי הדיווח, הוא קידם מתווי טרור תוך הפרה שיטתית של הפסקת האש.
