IDF Eliminates Hamas Commander Involved in Soldier Abductions
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the elimination of Jihad Samih Mahmoud Ismail, a Hamas Nukhba unit commander, during a targeted operation in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza. The IDF stated that Ismail illegally crossed into Israel on October 7 and engaged in combat with an Israeli tank crew, during which tank driver Sergeant Shaked Dahan was killed. Ismail was also directly involved in the abduction of Captain Omer Neitra, Senior Sergeant Oz Daniel, and Sergeant Nimrod Cohen.
According to the IDF, Ismail had a history of organizing ambushes against Israeli forces and was recently planning new attacks on military patrols and civilians, which the army deemed a severe violation of the ceasefire. The operation to eliminate him was conducted to neutralize an immediate and real threat to national security.
The IDF emphasized that extensive preparations were made to minimize civilian risk before the strike, utilizing precision munitions and aerial surveillance to monitor the situation. The operation was carried out by the army's press service.
