Veteran Pilot Fights Off Attacker in Cockpit, Lands Plane Safely

Captain Smith Machchhar, a seasoned Indian pilot with thousands of flight hours, is at the center of a dramatic aviation incident aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Machchhar was reportedly stabbed and injured by his co-pilot, an Omani national, during a violent altercation inside the cockpit while the plane was in mid-air with many passengers, including Israelis, on board.

Despite his injuries and the ensuing chaos, Machchhar fought back against his assailant. The aircraft experienced a serious emergency, losing altitude rapidly. Other crew members and passengers joined the struggle, helping to subdue the co-pilot. Once the situation in the cockpit stabilized, another crew member took control of the plane and diverted it for an emergency landing in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar, who joined Flydubai in 2022 after a long tenure with India's SpiceJet, has accumulated over 9,750 flight hours on Boeing 737 aircraft. His extensive experience, including roles as a training captain, proved crucial in managing the extreme situation, which required him to deal with personal injury and an immediate threat to the aircraft and its occupants.

Flight data revealed an unusually rapid descent of thousands of meters, accompanied by emergency codes indicating both a general emergency and a suspected unlawful interference with the aircraft's control. Following the co-pilot's neutralization, the crew managed to stabilize the aircraft and land it safely in Tabuk. The pilots received medical attention, and passengers were disembarked. An alternative flight was arranged for the Israeli passengers to return home after a long ordeal.
