IDF Disputes Police Claim of Tunnel Discovery in Qalqilya
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a rare public rebuttal to a police statement claiming the discovery of a tunnel route in the West Bank city of Qalqilya. The military stated that after inspecting two shafts, the existence of a tunnel was ruled out.
Earlier, police had reported finding a 25-meter-deep shaft in Qalqilya containing weapons and evidence of further tunnel construction. Four suspects were arrested during the operation. The IDF described the police's released information as "irresponsible."
According to the IDF, the two shafts found were approximately 12 meters deep and not located near the separation barrier. Furthermore, the weapons discovered by security forces, including IDF soldiers, were found near the shafts, not inside them. The military thus refuted key details in the police report regarding the tunnel's presence and the location of the seized weapons.
The four suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
