Israel's National Security Minister Targeted in Drone Attack Plot

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was the intended target of an assassination plot by a terrorist cell, according to Israeli security forces. Two residents of Nablus (Shechem) have been indicted for preparing a series of attacks, including the attempted assassination of Ben-Gvir using a suicide drone and the planned kidnapping of an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier. The cell was uncovered by the Judea and Samaria district police and the Shin Bet security agency.

Investigators allege the two suspects collaborated since late 2023, acquiring M16 and M4 rifles, Kalashnikovs, pistols, a hunting rifle, and ammunition. They reportedly trained in shooting, recruited new members, and discussed attacks on Israelis and security personnel. The plot to assassinate Ben-Gvir emerged in 2024 after the suspects watched a video of the minister visiting a terror attack site. One suspect proposed a "bait" attack to lure Ben-Gvir, later suggesting the use of an explosive-laden drone and attempting to procure components from China.

"The investigation revealed that they were preparing deadly attacks on Israeli citizens and security forces using vehicles and explosive-laden drones, as well as planning attacks using firearms and the kidnapping of IDF soldiers," the Shin Bet and police stated. The suspects' detention was repeatedly extended by the court. Following the investigation, the Samaria military prosecutor's office filed indictments against both men, who remain in custody pending trial.

Minister Ben-Gvir stated this was the 11th assassination attempt against him, attributing his survival to divine intervention. He affirmed that the threats would not deter him from his "hardline policy" regarding prisoners, demolishing illegal structures in the Negev, and pursuing the death penalty law. The report also references a prior joint operation by the Shin Bet and IDF that recently thwarted a Hamas cell near Hebron, which was allegedly coordinated from Turkey and also planned an attack on Ben-Gvir.
