Terror Cell Planned Assassination of Minister Ben-Gvir, Soldier Kidnappings

A terror cell operating near Nablus planned a series of attacks against Israelis and security forces, including the kidnapping of IDF soldiers and an assassination attempt on National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir using an explosive-laden drone. Following an investigation by the Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Judea and Samaria District and the Shin Bet, indictments were filed against two Palestinian members of the cell. According to the indictment, the two collaborated from late 2023 to advance "military" activities, amassing a significant arsenal of M-16, M-4, and Kalashnikov rifles, as well as pistols, a hunting rifle, and ammunition. They also worked to recruit and train additional operatives, conducted shooting drills, and discussed various attack scenarios targeting Israeli civilians and security forces.

During 2024, the indictment states, the pair began planning to target Ben-Gvir. After observing a video of the minister arriving at a terror attack scene, one operative suggested a "lure" attack: carrying out an initial attack and then assassinating Ben-Gvir when he arrived. The plan later evolved to include using an explosive-laden drone for the assassination. One of the operatives attempted to procure drone parts from China to execute this plan. The investigation revealed their ambitions extended beyond the assassination attempt, encompassing plans for attacks using explosive vehicles and drones against civilians and security forces, as well as shooting attacks and the kidnapping of IDF soldiers.

The two men were repeatedly detained, and after sufficient evidence was gathered, the military prosecution in Samaria filed indictments against them, seeking their detention until the legal proceedings conclude. Minister Ben-Gvir commented on the foiled assassination attempt, stating it was the eleventh attempt on his life. He asserted that these attempts would not deter him from his policies, including his stance on prison conditions, demolishing illegal construction in the Negev, and enforcing the death penalty law. Ben-Gvir also mentioned meeting some of those who allegedly tried to kill him in prison recently, describing them as fearful. He concluded by thanking the security agencies for their protection, stating, "He who believes does not fear."
