Israel Thwarts Drone Assassination Attempt Against National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir

Israeli security forces have uncovered an assassination attempt targeting National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, involving an explosive-laden drone. The plot was revealed during an investigation into a terrorist cell from Nablus, which has led to indictments against two Palestinian men. According to a joint statement from the police and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), the two men were involved in advancing terrorist activities, acquiring weapons, conducting weapons training, and planning multiple attacks against Israeli civilians and security forces.

Operating together since late 2023, the individuals referred to their activities as "military." They amassed a significant arsenal, including M-16 and M-4 rifles, Kalashnikovs, handguns, and a hunting rifle, along with ammunition. They also worked to recruit and train additional operatives. In 2024, the pair conceived the idea to target Ben-Gvir after watching a video of him arriving at a terror attack site. One suggested ambushing the minister at such a location, and the plan evolved to use an explosive drone, with attempts made to procure drone parts from China.

Beyond the plot against Ben-Gvir, the investigation revealed plans for other attacks, including the use of vehicles and drones carrying explosives, shooting attacks, and the kidnapping of IDF soldiers. Following the gathering of evidence by the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Shin Bet, the military prosecution in Samaria filed indictments, and the suspects were detained pending trial.

Ben-Gvir responded to the revelation, stating this was the eleventh attempt on his life. "This will not deter me and will not frighten me. Those terrorists who wanted to frighten me are trembling today," he said. He affirmed his commitment to continuing his policies regarding prisons, demolishing illegal construction in the Negev, and implementing the death penalty law. He thanked the Shin Bet, police, IDF, and the Magen unit for his security.
