Israel Mourns Two Soldiers Killed in Gaza Drone Incident

Israel is mourning the deaths of Sergeant Major (Res.) Nadav Kali and Sergeant Major (Res.) Ofek Moalem, soldiers from the 16th Brigade who were killed in a drone incident in northern Gaza. The two reservists died when an explosive drone, initially targeting a terrorist, changed course and detonated within their outpost as they were collecting it. The incident occurred on Thursday, just before the Sukkot holiday.

Political leaders and friends expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Bezalel Smotrich, Chairman of the Religious Zionist Party, stated, "Nadav and Ofek, the heroes, gave their lives for the people of Israel and fought bravely throughout the war." He added that the IDF would investigate the circumstances and learn lessons to ensure soldier safety. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana sent condolences, calling the loss "a great tragedy at the start of the holiday," and emphasized the nation's embrace of the families.

Minister of Diaspora Affairs Amichai Chikli identified Ofek Moalem as a 23-year-old from Jerusalem, a student of mechanical engineering. Friends remembered Moalem as a positive and dedicated individual who volunteered extensively for reserve duty, even when not required. He was described as a loyal friend and a hard worker who loved sports and his comrades.

Friends of Nadav Kali also shared heartfelt tributes, recalling his "huge smile" and describing him as a "golden person" and a "true warrior in spirit." He had been with his partner since age 17. Another friend noted Kali's unwavering loyalty and strength, stating he was a central figure in their social circle. A third friend highlighted Kali's passion for music and their shared creative projects, expressing disbelief at his loss.

In response to the unusual incident, the IDF Chief of Staff has ordered a temporary halt to operations involving "Atalef" type explosive drones and similar devices. A team of experts has been established to investigate the circumstances and prevent future occurrences.
