Two Israeli Reservists Killed in Gaza Drone Incident

Two Israeli reservists, 24-year-old Senior Sergeant Nadav Kali from the Har Halutz settlement and 23-year-old Senior Sergeant Ofek Moualem from Jerusalem, were killed in the Gaza Strip after an Israeli drone exploded. Both soldiers were part of the 7007th Battalion of the 16th Division and died during operational activity. The incident occurred when the soldiers were using two drones. The first drone launch was successful, but the second malfunctioned and fell to the ground on a base. When the soldiers approached the fallen drone, it exploded, causing severe injuries to both. They were evacuated for medical treatment but succumbed to their wounds. Preliminary investigations suggest the drone was a standard unmanned aerial vehicle used for a pre-planned mission. The exact causes of the fall and subsequent explosion are under investigation. Following the incident, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) ordered a temporary halt to the use of attack drones pending a full review. The military is examining the circumstances and the technical condition of the aircraft. Final conclusions have not yet been released. The deaths have renewed attention on "operational accidents," incidents occurring during combat but not due to enemy fire, such as mishandling of weapons, safety violations, friendly fire, or vehicle accidents. Data from the previous war period indicates the scale of this issue: in May 2026, it was reported that at least 77 out of 451 soldiers killed during the ground operation in Gaza, approximately 17%, died in operational accidents. This included 31 from friendly fire, 28 from weapons/ammunition accidents, 7 from vehicle accidents, 6 from firing rule violations, and 5 from manufacturing or weather-related incidents. Separately, the IDF reported that in 2025, 24 soldiers died in various accidents, including one during training, 17 in civilian traffic accidents, one in a military vehicle accident, one in a weapons incident, and five in other accidents.
