Two Israeli Reservists Killed in Gaza Drone Incident
The IDF confirmed the deaths of two reservist soldiers, Sergeant Major (res.) Nadav Kali, 24, from Har Halutz, and Sergeant Major (res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, from Jerusalem. Both were members of the 7007th Battalion, 16th Brigade, and were killed in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.
The incident occurred when the soldiers' unit was operating from a base in northern Gaza. They identified a Hamas operative and launched two explosive drones to neutralize him. The first drone reportedly reached its target, but the second drone inexplicably returned towards the Israeli forces.
The malfunctioning drone crashed inside the soldiers' position. As Kali and Moalem attempted to collect the disabled drone, it detonated, causing fatal injuries. They were evacuated to a hospital where they were pronounced dead.
In response to the unusual event, the IDF Chief of Staff has ordered a temporary halt to all operational activities involving "Bat" type explosive drones and other similar unmanned aerial vehicles until a technical investigation is completed. The IDF is examining what caused the second drone to deviate from its course, with possibilities including enemy electronic warfare or a technical malfunction.
While enemy jamming is being considered, the current assessment suggests Hamas may not possess advanced electronic warfare capabilities sufficient to explain the incident. Therefore, technical failure is also being investigated as a primary cause. The investigation is ongoing, and the definitive reason for the drone's malfunction has not yet been determined.
