Two Israeli Reservists Killed in Gaza Drone Incident

Two Israeli reservist soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip on the eve of the Sukkot holiday when a military drone exploded. The incident occurred in Beit Hanoun, in the northern Gaza Strip, where the soldiers were operating.

Staff Sergeant (res.) Nadav Kali, 24, from Har Halutz, and Staff Sergeant (res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, from Jerusalem, both serving in the 7007th Battalion of the 16th Brigade, were killed. Initial reports indicate the soldiers were flying two drones when one malfunctioned and crashed within their position. They approached the drone to inspect it when it exploded, causing severe to critical injuries. They were evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, where they were pronounced dead.

The IDF has launched a swift and in-depth investigation into the incident, examining all possibilities, including a potential communication issue that may have led to the explosion. The investigation will focus on understanding the technical aspects and issuing necessary directives. Early findings suggest the drone was standard issue and was operating on an approved operational mission.

Following the tragedy, the IDF has temporarily halted all drone flights pending the conclusion of the initial investigation. Both Kali and Moalem were posthumously promoted from Sergeant First Class (res.) to Staff Sergeant (res.). Their families have been notified.
