Ed Sheeran Apologizes for Remarks on Gaza, Calls Israeli Actions 'Unjustifiable'

Pop star Ed Sheeran has apologized for his handling of a controversy that arose last week when rapper Macklemore was excluded from opening acts for Sheeran's tour due to pro-Palestinian statements. In his first public comments on the matter, Sheeran criticized Israel's treatment of Gaza's residents, describing it as 'unjustifiable.' Speaking to a crowd in Philadelphia, Sheeran stated, 'I have to make tough decisions, I make mistakes, and I am very, very sorry.'

Sheeran acknowledged the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 Israelis, as 'horrific.' However, he characterized Israel's subsequent military response in Gaza, which has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced nearly the entire population, as 'catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate.' He also condemned 'systematic injustice' in the West Bank, referencing the expansion of Jewish settlements under Israel's right-wing coalition government.

The singer's remarks on Saturday marked a shift from his earlier stance, where he posted on Instagram that his concert audiences 'don't expect a political platform.' The controversy began after Macklemore shared on Instagram that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft informed Sheeran that Macklemore would not be allowed to perform at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Sheeran has scheduled concerts on September 25th and 26th. Macklemore stated that Kraft and other stadium owners told Sheeran he would not be permitted to perform if Macklemore remained on the tour, following Macklemore's chant of 'Free Palestine' at a September 4th concert.

Other opening acts subsequently withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore. Despite complying with stadium owners' demands to exclude Macklemore, Sheeran expressed deep concern about venue owners scrutinizing artists' content. 'This is happening in so many places I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world,' Sheeran said.

However, the controversy did not appear to be a primary focus for attendees interviewed before Sheeran's Saturday performance. Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered about half a mile from the venue, organizing to discuss the situation in Gaza and highlight local advocacy groups for Palestinians.
