Ed Sheeran Addresses Controversy, Calls Nova Festival Attack 'Shocking'

British singer Ed Sheeran has broken his silence regarding the controversy surrounding the removal of rapper Macklemore from their joint U.S. tour. During a concert in Philadelphia on Saturday, Sheeran paused his performance to address the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the issue of artistic freedom.

Sheeran condemned the events of October 7th, stating, "What happened at the Nova festival on October 7th was shocking and adds to hundreds of years of Jewish pain." He also criticized the situation in Gaza, calling it "catastrophic and disproportionate." Furthermore, he expressed concern about the "injustice we are seeing in the West Bank" and indicated he is learning how to assist victims.

The singer explained that he never intended to be a musical activist, aiming instead to keep his concerts as safe and unifying spaces. However, he voiced deep concern over venues pre-approving performance content, especially after producers and stadium owners decided to remove Macklemore following his pro-Palestinian speech.

In solidarity with Macklemore, other opening acts, including artists like Finneas and the band Lukas Graham, have withdrawn from the tour. This decision leaves Sheeran to continue his current U.S. tour dates alone.
