Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Crisis and Oct. 7 Massacre at Concert
During a concert in Philadelphia, British singer Ed Sheeran publicly addressed for the first time his decision to remove rapper Macklemore from his tour's opening acts. Macklemore was dropped following pro-Palestinian speeches and protest songs against Israel, which led production companies and stadium owners to threaten canceling Sheeran's shows amid pressure from Jewish and pro-Israel groups.
Sheeran explained to the audience that the decision was complex and not one he desired, stating he does not aim to be a politician or activist. His goal, he said, is to create a unifying and safe space. However, he felt compelled to address the humanitarian situation.
Addressing the Middle East conflict, Sheeran condemned the October 7 massacre at the Nova festival, acknowledging the Jewish pain. Conversely, he described the destruction and harm to civilians in Gaza as catastrophic and unjustifiable, also referencing criticism of policies in the West Bank.
Sheeran concluded by stating he is learning from various sources to understand how he can help victims and emphasized his commitment to continuing his solo performances to fulfill his obligations to fans. Outside the stadium, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated against Macklemore's removal.
