Ed Sheeran Calls Gaza Situation 'Catastrophic and Unjustifiable'

British singer Ed Sheeran has publicly addressed the Israel-Hamas war for the first time during a concert, describing the October 7th attack as "horrific" and the current situation in Gaza as "catastrophic and unjustifiable." Sheeran made these remarks on stage at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on September 19th. "My heart is broken by the scale of destruction and the loss of civilian lives, the loss of children," he stated, expressing a desire for his music and concerts to foster unity and humanity rather than political division.

The concert marked Sheeran's first appearance following controversy surrounding the U.S. leg of his "Mathematics Tour." Rapper Macklemore, who had been a supporting act, was removed from the tour after calling for the "liberation of Palestine" at shows in New Jersey. Stadium representatives reportedly informed tour organizers that they would not permit concerts featuring Macklemore. Sheeran clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter, not by him personally.

Following Macklemore's exclusion, other scheduled opening acts, including Finneas, Aaron Rose, Lukas Graham, and Beoga, withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore and his right to speak about the Palestinian cause. A small pro-Palestinian demonstration took place outside the Philadelphia stadium before Sheeran's performance. Sheeran acknowledged making difficult decisions recently and admitted to making mistakes.
