Ed Sheeran Calls Gaza Situation 'Catastrophic' Amid Tour Controversy

British singer Ed Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate" during a concert in Philadelphia on Saturday. His remarks came after a controversy surrounding the removal of rapper Macklemore from Sheeran's "Mathematics Tour." Sheeran also condemned the October 7 Hamas attack, including the massacre at the Nova festival, and acknowledged the "historic suffering of the Jewish people." He expressed deep distress over the deaths of civilians in Gaza, particularly children, and denounced what he called "systemic injustice" in the West Bank.

Sheeran stated he never intended to be a "militant musician" but felt thrust into a debate about free expression and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The controversy began when Macklemore withdrew from the tour after previously expressing support for Palestinians and accusing Israel of "genocide" and "apartheid." Macklemore claimed Robert Kraft, owner of the Gillette Stadium where part of the tour was scheduled, pressured for his removal. Kraft cited concerns over hate speech as justification.

Sheeran clarified he was not responsible for Macklemore's departure, stating the rapper's contract was with the tour promoter. Following Macklemore's exit, other artists like Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe also withdrew. The controversy also resurfaced criticism of a 2014 Macklemore performance where he wore a disguise, leading to accusations of antisemitic caricature, which he denied.

Ed Sheeran apologized to fans for his handling of the situation and expressed concern about potential censorship of artists by venues, as pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the concert.
