Ed Sheeran Calls Gaza Situation 'Catastrophic' Amid Tour Controversy

British singer Ed Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate" during a concert in Philadelphia on Saturday. His remarks came after a controversy surrounding the removal of rapper Macklemore from Sheeran's "Mathematics Tour." Sheeran also condemned the October 7 Hamas attack, including the massacre at the Nova festival, and acknowledged the "historical suffering of Jews." He expressed deep distress over the deaths of civilians in Gaza, particularly children, and denounced what he termed "systemic injustice" in the West Bank.

Sheeran stated he never intended to be a "militant musician" but felt compelled to speak out due to the controversy placing him at the center of debates on free expression and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The tour has been destabilized by several artists' departures following Macklemore's removal. Macklemore had previously expressed support for Palestinians, accusing Israel of "genocide" and "apartheid."

Macklemore claimed Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, pressured for his removal. Kraft cited concerns over hate speech as justification. Sheeran clarified that Macklemore's contract was with the tour promoter and he was not directly responsible for the decision. Following Macklemore's exit, artists including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe also withdrew from the tour.

The controversy also resurfaced criticism of a 2014 Macklemore performance where he wore a disguise, leading to accusations of antisemitic caricature, which he denied at the time. Sheeran apologized to fans for his handling of the situation and expressed concern about potential censorship of artists by venues, as pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the concert.
