Ed Sheeran Calls Gaza Situation 'Catastrophic' Amid Tour Controversy

British singer Ed Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic, unjustified, and disproportionate" during a concert in Philadelphia. He addressed the controversy surrounding his tour, which escalated after rapper Macklemore was excluded following his on-stage accusations against Israel of "genocide" and "apartheid."

Speaking on stage Saturday, Sheeran also condemned the October 7 Hamas-led attack, including the Nova music festival massacre, and referenced the "historical suffering of Jews." He expressed distress over the civilian deaths in Gaza, particularly children, and criticized what he termed "systemic injustice in the West Bank."

Sheeran stated he never wanted to be an "activist musician" but that the conflict placed him at the center of debates on free speech and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The controversy followed Macklemore's removal from the Love The Tour after he voiced support for Palestinians on stage. Macklemore accused New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose Gillette Stadium was a tour venue, of orchestrating pressure for his exclusion. Kraft defended his stance, citing concerns about hate speech.

Sheeran clarified that Macklemore's contract was with the tour promoter and denied responsibility for the decision. Subsequently, other artists including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Ray withdrew from the tour. Sheeran apologized to fans, acknowledging missteps in handling the conflict, and voiced concern about venues suppressing artists. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the concert.
