Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Conflict During Philadelphia Concert

During his first performance since a controversy erupted over rapper Macklemore's removal from his tour, Ed Sheeran addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Speaking at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday night, the British singer called the October 7th attack on Israel "horrific" and described the current situation in Gaza as "catastrophic and unjustifiable."

Sheeran acknowledged the difficult week, stating he had to make tough decisions and apologized for any disappointment caused. He explained that while he usually avoids being a political activist, the situation had placed him at the center of a debate about free speech and a complex political issue. He emphasized his commitment to making his concerts a safe space for everyone, promoting unity, humanity, and love, hope, and togetherness through his music.

The controversy began when Macklemore, who had been an opening act, expressed pro-Palestinian sentiments during a show in New Jersey. Following this, stadium owners reportedly canceled Macklemore's remaining opening slots on the tour. Sheeran stated that the decision was made by producers and stadium owners, not by him, and that he had tried to negotiate with them. He argued that canceling the shows would have negatively impacted hundreds of thousands of fans and the tour's crew.

However, industry sources suggested that an artist of Sheeran's stature typically has significant influence over such decisions. Several other artists, including Finneas and Lukas Graham, announced they would not continue with the tour following Macklemore's removal. Around 50 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the Philadelphia venue, with one attendee expressing disappointment in Sheeran for not more clearly supporting Macklemore.

Macklemore later announced a $1 million donation to Palestinian aid organizations and challenged billionaire Robert Kraft to match the amount. A spokesperson for Kraft stated that both he and Sheeran agreed to donate $2 million each to humanitarian aid in the region, though details on the recipients were not provided. Sheeran's representatives have not publicly confirmed this donation.
