During his first performance since a controversy erupted over his tour, singer Ed Sheeran addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza at his Philadelphia concert. He condemned the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, calling it "horrifying," but also stated that "what is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable." Sheeran expressed a desire to avoid being an "activist musician" and attempted to navigate the sensitive political landscape.

The controversy began when rapper Macklemore, who was a supporting act, was removed from the tour by producers and stadium owners. This decision followed Macklemore's pro-Palestinian statements and display of a keffiyeh during a performance. Billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and a stakeholder in the stadium, was reportedly a key figure in Macklemore's removal due to his rhetoric.

In response to Macklemore's dismissal, four other opening acts, including Finneas (Billie Eilish's brother), Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Beoga, withdrew from the tour in solidarity. The situation also led to protests outside the venue and a significant drop in secondary ticket prices, reportedly by 60%.

Sheeran acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating he did not want to disappoint fans but found himself at the center of a debate about free speech and a difficult political issue. He also mentioned his heart breaking over the destruction and loss of civilian lives in Gaza, adding that the "systemic injustice" in the West Bank should not be ignored.
