Sheeran stated that the events of October 7th in Israel, including the Nova music festival massacre, were "shocking" and added to "hundreds of years of Jewish pain." He further described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate," expressing that his heart breaks at the destruction and loss of civilian lives, particularly children.

Sheeran explained that he had initially hesitated to take a public stance, as he never wanted to be an "activist musician" and aimed for his concerts to be a "safe space for everyone." He acknowledged making difficult decisions and mistakes during the past week, apologizing to fans for any disappointment. He emphasized his desire for his music and performances to focus on unity rather than division, but felt compelled to speak out on this humanitarian issue.

The controversy began when Macklemore was removed from opening for Sheeran after expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments during his sets, including performing a song about the death of a Palestinian child.
