Israel Warns Citizens of 'Real Life Threat' Abroad Ahead of Holiday Travel

Israel's National Security Council (NSC) has issued a stark warning to Israeli citizens traveling abroad for the upcoming High Holidays, citing a significant increase in the motivation of terrorist groups to carry out attacks against Israelis and Jews worldwide. The NSC highlighted that Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, and global jihad organizations are actively seeking to perpetrate attacks, driven by a desire for revenge and to disrupt perceived Israeli gains.

The advisory emphasizes that this is not a new travel warning but an updated threat assessment for the holiday period, when many Israelis are expected to travel. The third anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attacks, approaching in the fall, is identified as a particularly sensitive time that could see increased protests, potentially violent, alongside heightened terror threats. Iran and its proxies are identified as the primary instigators, targeting diplomatic missions, senior Israeli officials, security personnel, Jewish community institutions, and even random Israeli civilians.

Hezbollah is also considered a significant threat, seeking retribution for war damage and the deaths of its operatives. Hamas, meanwhile, is reportedly investing in establishing terror infrastructure in Europe and elsewhere to carry out retaliatory attacks. Global jihad groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda continue to call for attacks, with a notable threat in Africa and Asia, but also a desire to strike in European capitals and the United States, potentially through lone actors.

The NSC noted a rise in attacks by lone individuals, with 25 Israelis and Jews killed in terror attacks abroad since the start of the "Iron Swords" war. These "distributed and unpredictable" threats often target softer, more accessible locations like mass gatherings, synagogues, and community centers. Specific countries like Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the UAE are highlighted as vulnerable to Iranian terror activities, while Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland, and Egypt (including the Sinai Peninsula) are at Level 4 travel advisory, recommending complete avoidance.

Israelis are urged to avoid displaying Israeli or Jewish symbols, limit speaking Hebrew in public in high-threat areas, and refrain from posting real-time locations on social media. Information indicating military service should be concealed. Increased vigilance is advised around Chabad houses, kosher restaurants, and synagogues. Travelers should avoid protests and political discussions with foreigners, and in case of a suspected threat, contact local security forces first, then Israeli assistance.
