Israel Warns of Heightened Terror Threats Abroad Ahead of Jewish Holidays

Israel's National Security Council (NSC) has issued an updated threat assessment ahead of the High Holy Days, warning of increased motivation by Iran and its proxies, including Hamas and global jihad organizations, to target Israelis and Jews worldwide. The NSC emphasized that this is a compilation of current global intelligence and terror trends, not new travel advisories.

The ongoing conflict with Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other entities has reportedly led to intensified efforts to attack Israelis beyond the country's borders. Alongside operational attempts, there is a rise in online incitement, fueling a greater motivation for attacks.

The NSC highlighted October 2026, marking three years since the October 7th massacre, as a particularly sensitive period that could see violent demonstrations and targeted attacks. Iran and its proxies remain the primary threat, seeking retaliation for recent setbacks. They are reportedly using terror mechanisms and criminal elements to target diplomatic missions, security personnel, prominent figures, community institutions, and Israeli tourists.

Hezbollah is also identified as a significant potential threat, driven by a desire to avenge its leadership and combat losses. In Europe and beyond, Hamas is investing heavily in establishing terror infrastructures for high-profile revenge attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets, in addition to its ongoing activities in the West Bank and Gaza. Global jihad groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda continue to issue direct calls for attacks on Jews, particularly in Asia and Africa, but also with the intent to carry out attacks by lone individuals in Europe and the United States.

The NSC also noted a worrying increase in lone-wolf attacks since the start of the war, resulting in 25 Israelis and Jews killed abroad. These attacks are described as decentralized and difficult to predict, influenced by online radicalization, with perpetrators often acting independently and targeting accessible "soft" locations like public gatherings, prayer centers, and community sites.

Jordan has been added to the list of countries with a severe Level 4 travel advisory, including a warning against layovers. Israelis are urged to avoid displaying Israeli or Jewish symbols, refrain from publicizing their locations, and remain vigilant around Chabad houses, synagogues, and kosher restaurants, as well as towards suspicious individuals and objects.
