Israel Warns Citizens of Elevated Threats Abroad Ahead of High Holidays

Israel's National Security Council (NSC) issued an updated threat assessment for Israelis traveling abroad ahead of the High Holidays, a period when many citizens are expected to leave the country. The NSC aims to raise awareness of potential dangers in various countries and encourage cautious behavior, clarifying that this is not an update to existing travel warnings but rather an overview of recent trends in terrorist group activity and their impact on risk levels.

The NSC highlighted the third anniversary of the October 7th massacre as a potentially sensitive date, anticipating it could become a focal point for demonstrations and hostile activity against Israelis and Jews worldwide. Iran is identified as the primary state sponsor of terrorism against Israelis and Jews abroad, motivated by a desire for revenge for recent attacks. Hezbollah is also cited for seeking revenge for the deaths of its senior members, while Hamas is reportedly working to establish terror infrastructures in Europe for high-profile attacks. ISIS and Al-Qaeda continue to issue calls for attacks on Jews, particularly in Africa, Asia, and European capitals.

Regarding specific destinations, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the UAE are categorized as being within Iran's "orbit." The NSC strongly advises against travel to Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland, and Egypt, including the Sinai Peninsula. Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Syria, and Lebanon are designated as countries where entry is prohibited by law for Israelis due to severe life-threatening risks. Additionally, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, and Algeria are listed as high-risk destinations to be avoided.

The NSC also provided guidelines for Israelis abroad, recommending they avoid displaying Israeli or Jewish symbols, such as kippahs or Hebrew-language clothing, and minimize the use of Hebrew in public. They also advised against real-time location sharing on social media. Former security force members are urged to conceal or remove any content indicating their service from social media to prevent personal targeting. The NSC stressed the importance of remaining vigilant near Chabad houses, kosher restaurants, and synagogues, avoiding protests and demonstrations, and refraining from political discussions with foreigners.
