Israel Warns of Heightened Terror Threat to Citizens Abroad

Israel's National Security Council (NSC) has issued a renewed warning regarding the elevated threat of terrorism targeting Israelis and Jews worldwide, particularly ahead of the High Holy Days. The NSC emphasized that this is not a new advisory but an updated reflection of ongoing trends, fueled by the conflict with Iran and its proxies, Hamas, global jihadist groups, and escalating anti-Israel sentiment.

The ongoing war and broader regional tensions have expanded the scope of risk for Israelis abroad, with an increased motivation to target Israeli and Jewish interests. The NSC specifically highlighted the upcoming third anniversary of the October 7th massacre as a potential focal point for protests, some of which could turn violent, and for intensified terror attack efforts.

Iran and its proxies remain the primary drivers of terror against Israelis and Jews globally, motivated by a desire for revenge for recent attacks and operating through various channels. Potential targets include diplomatic missions, senior Israeli officials, security personnel, Jewish community institutions, and even ordinary Israelis. Hezbollah is also identified as a significant threat, particularly after suffering heavy losses in the current conflict. Hamas is reportedly working to establish terror infrastructures in Europe and elsewhere for retaliatory attacks.

Lone wolf attacks represent a significant and growing concern, with 25 Israelis and Jews killed in such incidents abroad since the war began. These attacks are described as decentralized and unpredictable, often stemming from ideological radicalization and online anti-Israel discourse. Attackers typically target "soft" and accessible locations like public gatherings, community centers, and places of worship.

The NSC also identified specific regions of concern, including countries bordering Iran like Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the UAE, due to the proximity of Iranian terror infrastructure. Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland, and Egypt (including the Sinai Peninsula) are designated at Level 4 travel advisory, with a recommendation to avoid travel entirely. Travel to Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Syria, and Lebanon is strictly prohibited due to life-threatening danger. Israelis are advised to downplay Israeli or Jewish symbols, limit speaking Hebrew in public in certain areas, and avoid real-time location sharing on social media.

Recommendations for Israelis abroad include increased vigilance near Jewish sites, avoiding protests, refraining from political discussions with strangers, and keeping local emergency numbers accessible. In case of an emergency, the primary instruction is to contact local security forces immediately, followed by Israeli assistance hotlines.
