צה"ל חיסל ביום חמישי, 17 בספטמבר, את מוחמד סולימאן ביוק, בכיר בזרוע הצבאית של חמאס, בתקיפה באזור חאן יונס שבדרום רצועת עזה. ביוק היה מעורב בפלישה לישראל ב-7 באוקטובר. בשבועות האחרונים, לפני חיסולו, היה אחראי על הנחת מטעני חבלה ברחבי הרצועה במטרה לפגוע בכוחות צה"ל. בנוסף, הוא תכנן פיגועי טרור נגד חיילים ואזרחים ישראלים, ופעל לחיזוק המוכנות המבצעית של חמאס ולשיקום משאבי הארגון, תוך הפרה שיטתית של הפסקת האש. צה"ל הדגיש כי החיסול נועד לסכל איום מיידי.
