Israeli Health Ministry Issues Urgent Heatwave Warning Ahead of Weekend

The Israeli Ministry of Health has issued an urgent warning to the public, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses, to avoid exposure to extreme heat and sun as a severe heatwave is forecast across most of the country. The heatwave is expected to peak from Friday, July 31, through Sunday, August 2, according to the Meteorological Service.

The ministry advises minimizing unnecessary physical exertion, staying hydrated, and remaining in air-conditioned environments whenever possible. Drivers are urged to take regular breaks to refresh themselves. Outdoor visitors should wear wide-brimmed hats, light and comfortable clothing, apply sunscreen, and carry water. It is recommended to avoid nature hikes during the heatwave, but if undertaken, trips should be carefully planned with attention to weather conditions and participants’ health.

The Health Ministry also warns against leaving infants, children, elderly, or vulnerable individuals unattended in non-air-conditioned vehicles, as well as pets in vehicles or enclosed spaces without water and ventilation. Heatstroke is a serious risk during such conditions, particularly for the elderly, young children under four, cardiovascular patients, obese individuals, those with chronic diseases, people on certain medications, and anyone engaging in intense physical activity.

Signs of heatstroke include high body temperature, hot red skin, severe headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or loss of consciousness. In such cases, immediate emergency medical assistance should be sought by calling Magen David Adom. Until help arrives, the affected person should be moved to a cool, shaded area and cooled down. Importantly, victims should not be given fluids orally, as intravenous treatment is required.

The ministry recommends consulting a healthcare provider for personalized advice and precautions during the heatwave.
