Israeli Health Ministry Issues Heatwave Warning and Safety Guidelines

The Israeli Health Ministry has issued a warning ahead of a severe heatwave expected to peak from Friday, July 31, through Sunday, August 2, affecting most regions across the country. The ministry urges the general public, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses, to minimize exposure to heat and direct sunlight, avoid unnecessary physical exertion, stay hydrated, and remain in air-conditioned environments whenever possible.

Drivers are advised to take regular breaks to cool down, while those outdoors should wear wide-brimmed hats, light and comfortable clothing, apply sunscreen, and drink plenty of water. The ministry strongly warns against leaving infants, children, elderly, or vulnerable individuals unattended in non-air-conditioned vehicles. Similarly, pets should not be left in vehicles or enclosed spaces without water, ventilation, and reasonable temperatures.

The ministry highlights the risk of heatstroke, a dangerous condition where the body fails to cool itself, which poses increased danger to seniors, young children under four, heart and vascular patients, obese individuals, those with chronic diseases, people on certain medications, and those engaging in intense physical activity. It recommends consulting a healthcare provider about personal risks and special precautions.

During the heatwave, outdoor excursions are discouraged. If travel is necessary, careful planning, route assessment, and carrying sufficient water are essential. Symptoms of heatstroke include high body temperature, hot red skin, severe headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or loss of consciousness. In such cases, immediate emergency medical assistance should be sought by calling Magen David Adom. Until help arrives, victims should be moved to a cool, shaded area and cooled down. Importantly, heatstroke victims must not be given fluids orally; intravenous treatment by medical personnel is required.
