Israel Prepares for Severe Heatwave with Temperatures Reaching 47°C Near Sea of Galilee

Dr. Amir Gevati, head of Israel's Meteorological Service, warned on Thursday morning about an intense heatwave expected to peak early next week. He noted that while summer 2026 has been relatively mild so far, temperatures will rise sharply starting Friday, with Saturday already very hot and early next week reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius around the Sea of Galilee. This heatwave is described as the most significant and prolonged of the current season.

The Meteorological Service forecasts heavy to extreme heat stress across the entire country, with particularly high temperatures in the northern regions of Galilee and the Golan due to dry winds and very low humidity. These conditions also raise concerns about wildfire risks, especially with strong winds that can turn small sparks into large fires. Dr. Gevati advised avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours and warned of the dangers of heatstroke, referencing a similar heatwave last August that caused numerous health incidents.

Hagai Peleg, manager of the rescue station at Ein Gev Holiday Village on the Sea of Galilee, described the heat as oppressive, with temperatures around 43 degrees Celsius by midday. He compared the sensation of entering the shallow water to stepping into hot soup, while deeper water offers some relief. Despite the heat, the area remains crowded with visitors since the season opened in April. Peleg emphasized safety measures such as taking breaks from the water, wearing hats and sunscreen, drinking plenty of fluids, and only swimming at designated beaches with lifeguards.

Peleg also shared that lifeguards work in air-conditioned towers and regularly cool off in the water to manage the extreme conditions. Temperature forecasts for Thursday include highs ranging from 31°C in Haifa to 42°C in Eilat, with Jerusalem expected to reach 33°C. Temperatures are expected to begin dropping only by Tuesday.
